Most anglers had their best luck jigging minnows on top of mid-lake structure and along the first shoreline breaks anywhere from 6-20′. Some People also had luck pulling spinners with crawlers. It was a great week for fishing the Rainy River, despite lower water levels and dirty water. Both walleye and sturgeon anglers had good luck for both size and numbers. Pitching jigs with either plastics or shiners seemed to produce best for walleye anglers, with some people also having success trolling crank baits as well….

Along the South Shore, the northern pike fishing has heated up, with anglers finding them anywhere from 3-12 feet of water as they get ready to go up into the creeks and rivers, that feed into the lake, to spawn. A mix of bait, live suckers and frozen smelt, has been working well. Walleye fishing…

On the south shore, fishing has been a little on the tough side, with a lot of smaller fish being caught and having to filter through to find the good eaters, although there has been a good number of bigger slot fish being caught. Overall this weekend was a little bit slower for most anglers, although there were some reports of decent fishing. The best reports came North of Pine Island out in 20-24′ off of the first break-line along the Canadian border. With the colder temperatures approaching, we are hoping the West side of the lake heals up…

Walleye fishing has been good in 20′ out past Pine Island.  Use jigging spoons with a shiner or shiner head.  Fat heads on a dead stick have been productive – especially on colder days.   Anglers are still fishing pike in 10′ to 12′ off of Springsteel, in Zipple Bay, and out of Swift Ditch.
